In the old Islamic part of Cairo you will find one of the largest bazaars in the Middle East. The bazaar started out as a trading house in 1382. Here the caravan drivers could rest and at the same time carry on some business. After the Osman conquest the trading house grew into a genuine Turkish "souk," where all kinds of goods where sold.
Khan el-Khalili - Hagglers Paradise
The original system was made by a confusion of shops, bazaars, concentrated in a group surrounding a courtyard (khan) which spread out in all directions forming an enormous maze with narrow streets. Each group of bazaars, the souks, had a name that told you something about the kind of goods that were being sold. Today the system has partially been broken because of the domination everywhere of souvenir shops.
The Spice Market
However, if you ask for: Souk el-Futuh, where water pipes, shishas, are fabricated and sold, the perfume bazaar in Souk Sudani, the spice market south of el-Muski on Sharia al-Muizz lidin Allah in Souk el-Attarin, the tentmakers bazaar behind Bab Zuweila in Souk el-Khayyamiya or the non-tourist trading street that runs between Khan el-Khalili and Midan Attaba selling everything from electronics to bridal equipment, you will not be lead astray. In Khan el-Khalili, close to the Hussein Mosque you will also find the famous Fishawi Café that has been open non-stop for the last 200 years.
